Lee Brice, Hard to Love, The Abject Muse

Song Lyric Sunday | 01/12/25

It’s time for Song Lyric Sunday again. This week Jim has asked us to choose a song that includes the word “work” or “hard”. I decided on Hard to Love, by Lee Brice.

The lyrics to Lee Brice‘s new single (2012) and title track to his latest album, ‘Hard to Love,’ were penned by talented songwriters Ben Glover, Billy Montana and John Ozier. The three writers crafted the tune in Rosemary Beach, FL, a place where, for some reason, their creative minds always seem to be in overdrive.

“We’ve written a ton of songs that have gotten cut there, so there must be some sort of magic down there!” Glover tells Taste of Country with a laugh. “Basically, we all got to talking about being dudes. Billy has been married a long time, and I’ve been married for 10 years. We were both talking about how we are not great husbands some of the times [laughs]! We thought we’d write a classic song about dudes saying, ‘You know I’m kind of a pain in the ass.’ We said, ‘Let’s just talk about ourselves in the song … that should be easy!’”

“We literally wrote it in two and a half hours,” recalls Glover. “We just said, ‘What are we? I’m insensitive and I say stupid things.’ People always write songs about guys apologizing, so this one we wrote saying how it is.”

The Lyrics

I am insensitive, I have a tendency
To pay more attention to the things that I need
Sometimes I drink too much
Sometimes I test your trust
Sometimes I don't why you stay with me

I'm hard to love, hard to love, oh, I don't make it easy
And, I couldn't do it if I stood where you stood
I'm hard to love, hard to love, and you say that you need me
I don't deserve it, but I love that you love me good
Mmm, yeah

I am a short fuse
I am a wreckin' ball, crashin' into your heart like I do
You're like a Sunday mornin'
Full of grace and full of Jesus
I wish that I could be more like you

I'm hard to love, hard to love, oh, I don't make it easy
'And I couldn't do it if I stood where you stood
I'm hard to love, hard to love, and you say that you need me
I don't deserve it, but I love that you love me good
Love me good

Girl, you've given me a million-second chances
And I don't ever wanna take you for granted
I'm just a man, I'm just a man
Hard to love, hard to love, oh, I don't make it easy

And I couldn't do it If I stood where you stood
I'm hard to love, hard to love, and you say that you need me
I don't deserve it, but I love that you love me

(Hard to love, hard to love)
I don't make it easy
I couldn't do it if I stood where you stood
I'm hard to love, hard to love, and you say that you need me

I don't deserve it, but I love that you love me good (hard to love, hard to love)
You love me good (hard to love, hard to love)
You love me good

    1. Thanks, Nancy. I hardly ever see country music over here so, I thought I’d see what happens. I like Lee Brice a lot too. He’s also one of my faves. :-)

      1. Most welcome, Muse! A while back my husband and I got deep into country music…..a long dusty boot scootin’ walk from our usual rock-hard rock-metal tunes. Today we listen to everything; in fact, I’ll be featuring a country number in a couple of days.

  6. Country music has relatable lyrics that tell stories about everyday life struggles, love, loss, and heartbreak, and this allows listeners to connect with the emotions expressed in the songs on a deep level.  Lee Brice did that in this song and thanks for sharing your music, Susan.
