    Three of Wands | Chuck + Melanie

    Melanie was beyond despair. “Why me?” She asked herself. “What did I do to deserve this?”

    She had been sent to live out her life alone, on an isolated island in the Aegean. No one ever came there, not even pirates, not even accidentally. Even if someone did happen to show up, no doubt her looks would scare them to death. A tangled nest of poisonous snakes for hair isn’t exactly a turn-on.

    There was nothing to do but think. Think about what? Her future? Melanie didn’t have a future; all she had was the past. And so, she remembered. All day, every day she filled her time going over every memory she had, from when she was a toddler until right before that jealous bitch cast the spell that made her hair turn into snakes and her face too horrible to look at.

    It all started when Melanie met the most amazing man ever and fell in love. His name was Chuck. It turned out that Melanie wasn’t the only one who had the hots for Chuck. Kalista the witch, did too. She warned Melanie three different times to stay away from Chuck. Kalista didn’t understand that even if Melanie wanted to stay away, she wouldn’t have been able to. Melanie and Chuck were in love, and love calls the shots.

    Finally, when Kalista saw that Melanie wasn’t going to cooperate, she cast her spell and had Melanie sent to the nameless island. She didn’t know how long she’d been there or what day it was. The loneliness was crushing. What made it even more tortuous was that there was absolutely no chance of visitors. Melanie would never see another human being.

    Melanie often wondered what became of Chuck, if he ended up with Kalista or met someone new. Or if maybe he still loved Melanie and didn’t want to be with anyone else. There was no way of knowing.

    All she could do was cry.

    The old neighborhood was quiet as sin.

    Louise cut the engine and dimmed the headlights. She let the car coast slowly and silently into the driveway that she played hopscotch on as a kid. Those days seem forever ago. She eased the car into the garage.

    She’d checked the car numerous times for a tracking device. She even took it to her trusted mechanic (and brother), and he could find nothing. Louise ditched her old cell phone in the Chicago River after buying a new one. There should be no way her freak of a soon-to-be ex-husband could track her now.

    This time she took great pains in formulating her escape plan. She even let hubby think that she and her mom had a big fight and were now estranged.

    She glanced up and down the street. Everything seemed normal.

    Once inside, Louise’s mom, Lavinia, put on a pot of coffee and got the cherry coffee cake out of the fridge. The two women chatted about this & that, carefully avoiding the topic that weighed on both of their minds. Louise would tell her when she was ready.

    Louise was starting to relax. She even felt a little hungry and took a large piece of coffee cake.

    The doorbell rang and Louise and her mother jumped simultaneously.

    “Crap.” Louise said, her eyes filling with tears.

    “Is it Sylvester?”

    Louise shrugged. “Probably. He always finds me.”

    “I’ll take care of it.” Lavinia got up from the table and strode purposely into the bedroom.

    “Mom?” Louise called. “What are you going to do?”

    “Just stay in the kitchen and be quiet.”

    Louise had never heard her mother sound so forceful, so capable. It was unsettling and a bit surreal.

    She heard the front door creak open, then a strange rush of air that Louise had never heard before. It was a weird sound that gave her the chills.

    Silence.

    “Louise? Can you come here, please?”

    There’s Mom’s weird voice again. Louise rushed into the living room and gasped at the sight in the doorway.

    “Honey, don’t just stand there,” Lavinia said. “Help me drag this asshole’s body inside.”

    So that’s what a silencer sounds like.

    “What are we going to do with him?”

    “Battery acid.” She grinned.

    “Mother knows best …” Louise grabbed the corpse’s arm and began dragging.

    Bubba the Butcher

    Somehow, Bubba (our butcher) is under the impression that I am available. I wear my wedding rings and make sure to mention my husband’s name in every conversation. One day, I asked him where he got this crazy idea.

    “Well Ma’am, it stands to reason that since your hubby is spreadin’ hisself thin — I see him and a little blonde chickee goin’ into the bar across the street, there — he nodded toward Kay-Kay’s Tavern, that you might as well have some fun too. If you ain’t already, I mean.”

    “In that case Bubba, let’s you and I have some fun too; you may pick me up this evening at 8:00.”

  • Hammer Meets Nail

    Hammer Meets Nail

    So, a hammer walks into The Nutz & Boltz Tavern after a tough day on the job site.

    The bartender leans over the bar. “What’ll it be, Hambo?”

    “Gimme a Rusty Nail, Mack,” he replied. “And keep ’em comin’!”

    “Rough day, huh? You look beat.” Mack observed as he built Ham’s drink.

    Ham tried to shrug his steel shoulders. “Naaah. I’ll be alright after I pound a few of these down.”

    Mack nodded. “That’s what you do best, buddy!”

    The bartender’s sharp wit was never wasted on Hambo, and the two shared a hardy laugh.

    Pretty soon, a nail saunters in to the same tavern. Seeing Hambo in her regular barstool, she opts for a seat at the other end of the bar. The little nail didn’t want any trouble.

    “Be right back, Hambo.”

    Mack swaggered toward his new patron.  “Well, hello, Naylene…”

    “Uh, h-h-hi, Mack.” Naylene stammered.  His penetrating gaze and sleek, cunning style made her want to bolt.

    “What can I do for you?”

    His piercing voice seemed to caress the air. Naylene felt her shaft grow weak and the metallic tingle in her shank rendered her speechless. Her head suddenly felt flatter than usual, and she bowed it.

    “How ’bout Harvey Wallbanger?”

    “N-n-no. M-make it a screwdriver.” Naylene mumbled, glancing in Hambo’s direction. “I don’t wanna get hammered.”

    “Understood.” Mack nodded and began to turn away but switched back to Naylene. “Forgive my brashness, but I gotta tell ya. Naylene, your gripper marks are absolutely exquisite.”

    Naylene lifted her flat head. OMG! Does this mean he likes me? Do I dare to hope?

    Mack’s dangerous gash of a smile softened as Naylene beamed at him. Maybe she’s not so tacky after all. In fact, I think she’s…totally galvanized!

    It was a magic moment for Mack and Naylene—a moment just begging for a monkey wrench.

    Hambo became bored as hammers are wont to do when they aren’t smashing things. He was also more than a little jealous over the attention being paid to a common flathead.  To amuse himself, Hambo pummeled the buttons on the jukebox until Simon & Garfunkel’s El Condor Pasa echoed through the tavern.

    Six of Wands | Mayhem & the Minotaur

    Here we have an example of what can happen when children and ‘daredevil’ adults tease a minotaur. The Minotaur is known for his ability to squeeze into small places, indoor or out. In the picture below he has followed a group of children into the labyrinth.

    It makes one wonder what these kids did to aggravate the minotaur to such a degree, no?

    Well, these young geniuses thought the thing to do was paint “Kiss Me, I’m Greek” in white letters on the Minotaur’s backside while he was sleeping. Of course, the Minotaur woke up in the middle of everything and lost his mind. He chased these kids through the pasture, two neighborhood and now finally into the labyrinth.

    The Minotaur’s shadow is quite large, indicating that he is not far behind the kids and could easily overtake them. But he doesn’t. It seems he is just trying to teach them a lesson — one that could save their lives in the future.

    Still, it is probably a good the Minotaur can neither read nor see his back side. Otherwise, this story could have had a very different ending.
