  • Somebody Else

    Somebody Else

It’s Fandango’s Flashback Friday! This poem was originally written for the dVerse Poet’s Pub exactly one year ago today. I hope you enjoy it.

For today’s Meeting the Bar at the dVerse Poets Pub, we are writing to the First-Person Narrative, using  “I am” as part of our poem. The voice and the specific point of view is you, the poet.

    I am somebody

    else not the one

I used to be, the one

    everyone remembers.

    Even my shadow

    is a

    stranger’s silhouette —

    the shadow

    of what once was.

    Sometimes, even I am fooled

but when I can glance quickly enough

(before it knows I’ve seen it)

    it is only obvious that

    it

    should be following

    somebody else.

  • This Time

    This Time

It’s Quadrille Monday over at the dVerse Poets Pub. This time our word prompt is some form of the word “blue.”

    The Blues won’t last,

    they tell me, this too

    shall pass, and soon

    sunshine’ll sneak itself through.

    What do they know?

    Nothin.’

    ‘Cause they don’t know you.

    If they did, they’d know

(just like I do) that this time

    The Blues ain’t

    goin’ no-damn-where.

  • Moon in my Shine

This week on Song Lyric Sunday, Jim Adams has given us the prompt of Earth/Wind/Fire/Air. I’ve chosen this killer love song by Tyler Farr, which is close to my heart: Whiskey in my Water.

    Lyrics:

In my truck flying down a dirt road
Pickin’ you up, feelin’ kinda crazy
I think I’m in luck ’cause I know my baby

She slaps my knee says “boy why you smiling?”
Doing my best so hard to hide it
I know what’s up, so I just shoot her a wink

‘Cause when the sun goes down it’ll get a little hotter
Make an old boy’s heart beat a little harder
I know I can’t lose ’cause it’s going down smooth tonight, baby
One ain’t enough man may I have another
Sitting ’round the fire gettin’ drunk on each other
Every day I pray I thank God I got her she’s the moon in my shine
    The whiskey in my water

    (The whiskey in my water)

    When we’re past Flint Bridge,
    We’ll break out the bottle
Drop it down low, crank up the throttle
I’m good to go, ’cause I’ve got you tonight baby

‘Cause when the sun goes down it’ll get a little hotter
Make an old boy’s heart beat a little harder
I know I can’t lose ’cause it’s going down smooth tonight, baby
One ain’t enough man may I have another
Sitting ’round the fire gettin’ drunk on each other
Every day I pray I thank God I got her she’s the moon in my shine
    The whiskey in my water

Sitting on this hill with her
    Looking in them baby blues
Wishing that the sky would change
I’ve been thinking about it all damn day
    I can hardly wait

‘Cause when the sun goes down it’ll get a little hotter
Make an old boy’s heart beat a little harder
I know I can’t lose ’cause it’s going down smooth tonight baby
One ain’t enough man may I have another
Sitting ’round the fire gettin’ drunk on each other
Every day I pray I thank God I got her she’s the moon in my shine
    The whiskey in my water
    The whiskey in my water

    SongFacts

    • Tyler Farr: “‘Whiskey in My Water’ is just one of those songs that just came out of nowhere. The lyrics just flowed. It’s pretty much my way, or any other country boy’s way, of expressing to a girl, ‘Hey, you’re my kind of girl.”
    • The music video was directed by Chris Hicky (Chris Young’s “You“, Tim McGraw’s “Truck Yeah“). The clip was shot at the George Dickel distillery outside of Nashville.
    • Tyler Farr explained that he wanted to write a love song, and so he decided to write it from a country guy’s perspective. “As a songwriter or artist, there’s only so many ways you can say ‘I love you’ or ‘I think you’re beautiful,’” he said. “My way was to take that from a country boy standpoint and say ‘You’re the moon in my shine, whiskey in my water.’”

Farr added that he had no hesitation about taking himself to a vulnerable place. “I don’t mind putting my heart out there for the audience, and for the country music fans … to be vulnerable with them … that’s my job as an artist,” he said. “That’s what country music is; it’s real songs about what real people do.”

    • The music video portrays a young couple passionately in love. The clip was directed by Chris Hicky, who has also worked with many other artists in the country music genre, including Dierks Bentley, Carrie Underwood, Lady Antebellum and Miranda Lamb

  • The Best Thing

This week at Song Lyric Sunday, Jim has given us the prompts of good/better/best. The song I chose is by the amazeballs Luther Vandross (may he rest in peace), “The Night I Fell in Love.”

Unfortunately, I could find no interesting song facts about this song.

    Lyrics

I keep going over it and over it again in my mind
I get these flashbacks and I, I feel so good
This is one night that I’ll never forget
You see, it was just like in the movies
I mean, it actually happened just like this
The stars were shining brighter than most of the time
Then love came out of nowhere
No thrill will ever be like
(The night that I fell in love)
No thrill will ever be like
(The night that I fell in love)
It surely was the best thing I ever did that night
(That night when I fell in love)
The stars were in your eyes
(The night that I fell in love) with you
I’ve known so many people, been to most parts of the world
And seen some things that have blown my mind, yeas I, but
No thrill will ever feel like
(The night that I fell in love)
No thrill will ever be like
(The night that I fell in love)
It surely was the best thing to happen to my night
(That night when I fell in love)
The stars’ lights were in your eyes
(The night that I fell in love) with you
I thought I would be happy without any love in my world
But now I know that, that is so untrue yeh
No thrill will ever be like
(The night that I fell in love)
No thrill will ever be like
(The night that I fell in love)
It surely was the best thing to happen to my night
(That night when I fell in love)
The stars’ lights were in your eyes
(That night that I fell in love) with you
All I can ever do is think about that night
All I can ever do is think about that night, that night, that night
All I can ever do is think about that night, that night
All I can ever do is think about that night, that night, that night
All I can ever do is think about that night, that night, that night
