A Moonlit Night

This week over at the Friday Fictioneers blog, Rochelle has given us the above photo by Ceayr as a writing prompt. 100 words.

“So, that’s where it happened.” Madeleine explained and nodded toward the fountain.

“How romantic!” Dalia smiled.

“Yeah, I suppose.” Madeleine gripped her walker and looked away.

“You suppose? Tell me, was it a moonlit night?”

“Dalia, it was a long time ago.” She paused, “Maybe there was a moon… who remembers?”

“Maddy, I should’ve told you this ages ago, but thank you for not marrying Sam. We’ve been so very happy over the years.” She patted her friend’s arm with an arthritic hand.

“I know, and I’m glad for you.” Biggest mistake I ever made. “Now let’s get some lunch.”

  1. Excellent take! I wonder how often something like this happens?

    1. Me too. It sure would be a hard secret to keep. You’d think people would catch on from the eye contact and subtle comments.

      1. Many people are willfully blind. They wouldn’t catch on if you wrote on the head of a sledge-hammer, and smacked them between the eyes.

  5. Ah old age regrets. I hope I don’t have any. I bet these women have stories to tell.

    1. Me too. I’d rather regret doing something than not doing it though.

  6. I’m amazed they have managed to stay friends, she seems bitter. Perhaps they are all each other has left now.

    1. I think she’s more mad at herself than anything. Perhaps I should expand the story…

  12. Oh, my. I’m wondering if Maddy stayed single? Did Dalia ever guess how much Maddy regretted how things turned out? This could be developed into a novel!
