Camille was having a tough time in her geometry class. She wasn’t interested in it, for one thing. It didn’t seem relevant to her life or anyone else’s. Circles and rectangles made sense to her but anything more complicated than that, well, forget it. Camille wanted to be a writer. This geometry junk wasn’t going to help her reach that goal.

What a waste of time! I should be in a Lit. or writing class right now. God, please get me out of here!

And then it happened. The instructor, Mr. Fabrizio, scanned the room, and his eyes rested on Camille. Her stomach felt like it sank to her ankles.

“Ms. Knutson,” he began. “Can you please define an obtuse triangle for us?”

Oh, hell! Camille stood up, cleared her throat, and gave it her best shot. “An obtuse triangle is a triangle that is annoyingly slow or dimwitted.”

The class and instructor were silent as they let this information sink in. Then, uproarious laughter filled the room. Everyone but Mr. Fabrizio found Camille’s answer hysterical. Camille sat paralyzed at her desk, tears filling her eyes.

“That’s enough!”

The class immediately settled down. They knew that tone of voice.

“Camille, now who’s being obtuse?”

Camille had had enough. “Must be some triangle because it sure isn’t me.” She gathered her books and headed toward the door. “I’m sorry Breezy (the classes’ nickname for Mr. Fabrizio) but I’m dropping this class.”

She closed the door quietly behind her. Thank you, God.

Damn, that’s the third student I’ve lost this week and it’s only Tuesday. I’m no good at this. Guess I should’ve been a writer like my mom said.
