    Thetes were the fourth and lowest social class in Athens, below the citizens, the metics (resident aliens), and the slaves.

        Sorry I got that wrong, which shows that you need to check more than one website for information. The thetes were one level up from slaves, as they were free, but they had no land or other resources. They were the farmers or workers for wages.
