Your final three words this week are:
LINGER
LISTEN
WATCH
After the Tupperware party, Toni lingered a while in the hallway, listening. She had a feeling these snobby women didn’t really like her. Unless it was her imagination, they’d made her feel as though she didn’t fit in, as if she were less, somehow. True, she moved to Jackson from Oklahoma City and certainly wasn’t from ‘Old Money’ — or any money, for that matter — but they weren’t even giving her a chance.
When Toni asked about the Junior League, they looked at her as if she grew a second head. One of them said, “Oh no, dear. That’s not for you. But there are plenty of other volunteer opportunities here in Jackson.”
On the positive side, the maids were friendly and did try to make her feel not unwelcome. They even asked her about herself and vice versa. So, that part of the evening was rather pleasant. They even exchanged phone numbers.
While Toni was going over the evening’s events, she failed to see a woman approach her. “Excuse me, dear, would you mind getting my coat?”
Toni looked at her, incredulous. “I believe they are in the master bedroom, on the bed. “
“Yes, I know where they are, ” the woman said, “I was wondering if you’d get mine for me? Please?” And she said it in the most condescending tone; it made Toni want to smack her. But she didn’t.
“Perhaps one of the maids could help you,” Toni said stiffly.
“Oh!” The woman put her delicate hand to her over lip-sticked mouth. “I thought you … “
“Yes, I know what you thought.” Toni replied. “You know what else, I think? I think ‘southern hospitality’ is a myth!”
The woman gasped, “Well, I never!”
“That’s obvious.” Toni grinned.
Toni found the master bedroom, grabbed her coat and left.
