ORACLE
Almost everyone has a Ouija board story — aka, “the mystifying oracle.” Here’s one more.
Jackie and her bestie, Wanda, found themselves bored on a rainy Saturday afternoon. That is, until Jackie remembered the old Ouija board she found in the basement last week.
“Stay right here,” Jackie jumped up. “I have an idea!”
Wanda yawned. “Okay…”
Jackie ran downstairs and retrieved the dusty Ouija board box from the basement. She wiped the dust off an brought the board and planchette into the living room where they were sitting.
“What’s that?” Wanda asked.
“It’s a Ouija board. Ever use one before?”
“Never even heard of it.” Wanda replied. “What’s it do?”
“It answers questions and tells you the future or whatever else you want to know.”
“What? How?”
Jackie shrugged. “I dunno for sure, but I remember my sister Sylvia using it with her friends a few years ago.”
“Okay. What do we do?”
Jackie read the instructions on the box. “First we sit on the floor, cross-legged.”
The girls got into position.
“Now, we set the board on our knees, so it’s balanced between us.”
“And this!” Jackie raised the planchette. “This is what tells us the answers.” She put the planchette in the middle of the board. “Now, rest your fingers gently on this thing.” Jackie rested her fingers on the opposite side. “Now we wait.”
“For what?” Wanda asked.
“For it to move. We have to be quiet and concentrate.”
“On what?”
“I don’t know.” Jackie said. “Anything, I guess. Let’s just wait.”
So, they waited. After about ten minutes there was some movement. The girls kept their fingers on it as it circled the board. It rested on, “Hello.”
“Holy crap! It works!” Wanda whispered.
“Yeah. Weird, huh?”
“Can we ask it its name?” Wanda asked.
“Sure.” So, they did and the planchette spelled out, “WYBHPOL.”
“Huh?” Jackie and Wanda looked at each other. “Never mind. Ask it something else.”
“Okay,” Wanda thought for a minute. “How can I make Aiden Mitchell to fall in love with me?”
Jackie rolled her eyes. “Aidan, again?”
“I’m in love.” Wanda explained. “It’s not like I can help it!”
Slowly, the planchette made its way around the board. It spelled out “1 pound offal.”
“What’s an offal?” Wanda whispered.
“Butchered animal guts, I think. Look! It’s spelling something else.”
It spelled “Aidan lock hair.” It continued, “3 drops blood.”
“Whose blood?” Wanda asked.
It spelled “You.” Then, “bury at midnite.”
“This is too weird,” Wanda said and took her fingers off the planchette.
“Put your fingers back. I want to ask it something.”
“Okay.” Wanda sighed. “But no more after this, k?”
Jackie nodded. “Are my parents going to get divorced?”
Wanda looked at her questioningly. “No shit?”
The planchette began moving in circles, faster and faster, coming closer and closer to the edge of the board. The girls were scared but kept their fingers on it until it flew off the board and slammed against the wall.
They both screamed. Jackie jumped up and turned on every light in the house. “Let’s get rid of this thing!”
“I’m not touchin’ it!” Wanda announced.
“I’ll do it.” Jackie grabbed the board and picked up the planchette from the floor. She put them both back in the box and took it out to the garbage then ran back into the house and locked the door.
“The garbage men don’t come until Tuesday, but at least it’s out of the house.”
That was the last time either of them messed around with a Ouija board. However, six months later Jackie’s mom filed for divorce from her father.
