I wish I knew how to quit you*

Although my heart breaks at the thought.

But neither of us has a clue.

I gazed into your eyes and knew

This crazy love would come to naught.

I wish I knew how to quit you.

Sunshine, rain, and winter’s ice blue

In a maze of feelings we’re caught,

But neither of us has a clue.

Deep in my heart, my love is true

No matter how hard my mind fought.

I wish I knew how to quit you.

Now it comes, the turn of the screw

With pain and regret my life’s fraught

But neither of us has a clue.

Turns out I should have fought for you

I miss you and the love you brought.

I wish I knew how to quit you

But neither of us had a clue.

    *From the film Brokeback Mountain.

    Fibbing Friday | 5/28/2021

    May 28, 2021

It’s Fibbing Friday again and our host is PCGuyIV of Thoughts & Theories fame. This week, rather than specific questions to answer, I have a bunch of medical and anatomical words that need definitions. Obviously, those need to be definitions that you won’t find in any dictionary or textbook. Have fun!

    sphincter

a portion of the anatomy that puckers in response to fear.

    phalanges

Kind of like fallen angels but refers to fallen arches (Like when a McDonald’s goes out of business).

    rectum

this occurs when any portion of one’s anatomy becomes broken or fails to work. Example: “Parts of your brain are not working because you rectum.”

    varicose

Very close, but not close enough. Example: Varicos only counts in horseshoes.

    aorta

Slang for something one should do: Ah orta do that…

    vein

An old Carly Simon song: You’re so Vein

    artery

It’s similar to archery but instead of shooting arrows,, one arms their bow with pieces of art–the more expensive, the better!

    alveolus

Al Veolus: That guy from the old neighborhood who became a plumber.

    bacteria

    The back of the cafeteria

    virus

When YouTube videos go viral it is because they’ve contracted a virus.

  • Kerwyn Argyle

    Kerwyn Argyle

    May 28, 2021

It’s Fandango’s Flashback Friday! This story was written back in 2016, I believe. Hope you enjoy!

The wind howled outside his hovel as Kerwyn Argyle ladled the last of the pungent stew into his bowl. It was going bad, but the thick glop warmed his innards nicely that December evening.

It was a thankless job, being the cemetery’s caretaker, but Kerwyn didn’t mind it. In fact, he took pride in his occupation, as did his father and grandfather before him. Unlike them, however, Kerwyn never felt the necessity to marry. Women scared him, just a bit if the truth were told. He knew neither what to make of them, nor what to do with them. Thus, he gave the fairer sex a wide berth and they responded in kind.

    Problem solved.

It would follow then, that Kerwyn would be a lonely soul, but this was not so. He found his friends, such as they were, in the residents under his care. He took note of every birthday and departure date, never failing to acknowledge the significance of each. Sometimes it was with a fresh flower or a shot of rye; other times, as in the case of a child, he’d offer a sweetmeat or perhaps a poppet if there were the time and spare cloth from which to fashion one.

The gifts were always appropriate, even as the recipients aged.

As the years passed, Kerwyn’s circle of friends grew. He thought himself the best kind of friend; one who would never forsake the old in favor of the new.  He was such a good friend, in fact, that he worried as to whom would look after them upon his own demise.

Then, it occurred to him, that perhaps when a soul departs this world, so does its need for looking after. Could it be that when the soul becomes free; free as it is meant to be, it leaves behind only the spent vehicle that could carry it no further?

Relieved and enlightened, Kerwyn Argyle dug a space in which to deposit his vehicle and joined the many, many friends whom he held so dear.

  • Kyle’s Conundrum

    Kyle’s Conundrum

    May 26, 2021
    PHOTO PROMPT © Miles Rost

It’s time for Friday Fictioneers again! This week, our host Rochelle Wisoff-Fields has chosen the image above by Miles Rost as our visual prompt.

Kyle looked at it from all angles but saw no other way out.

Normally, one wouldn’t think of an asparagus beetle as having mental health issues, but Kyle was the anomaly.

His spotted little life was fraught with angst. Depression, anxiety, and hunger were his only companions.

And all because of one dirty secret: Kyle hated asparagus. He’d tried to acquire a taste for it, but all he found palatable was ever-elusive chocolate.

Perched on the edge of a wire, Kyle closed his eyes and jumped.

Instead of plummeting to earth, Kyle soared aloft.

    “Oh, yeah,” he sighed. “Wings.”

  • A Thing

    A Thing

    See? There it is.

The very same tree in which you carved our initials all those years ago.

You can still see them if you know where to look, which of course I do.

At the time, I thought it was a silly thing to do, kid stuff.

But now I am glad you didn’t listen to me.

You said we’d be together forever; for as long as this tree was standing.

I thank God every day for this tree — proof that

you and I really happened; that we were

    A Thing.

    It’s all that’s left.
