Silver Midnight Moon

The prompt at dVerse Poets Pub today is Time and What if?

Remember the night

of the silver midnight moon

when the stars were

bigger and shinier than

they should have been?

What if we’d wished on the

one that had fallen—

a quicksilver flash in the sky—

instead of falling, so easily, ourselves?

What if, instead of

the straight, clear shot, we’d chosen

the other path and strolled it

hand-in-hand?

The winding, rutted, uphill trail

That would’ve given us

pause, to think and

think again.

  1. I like the whole poem, but especially the 2nd stanza, where you parallel the falling star and falling in love. Indeed and the wonder on relationships that have fallen like stars without wishes :(

Did you put this in Mr Linky? I didn’t see it there.

    1. Thank you. No, I was at work & their computers don’t allow Mr. Linky activity. I will put it there now.

  3. I like the comparisons you build here, a lovely analogy….and that slow, steep climb is sometimes the better result in love and relationships.

    1. Thank you Mish. I appreciate your comments and so glad you enjoyed. I agree in that the climb and road bumps can make the love that much sweeter.

  4. Wonderful poem Susan, filled with wishful thinking. We need to always remember, we may have been eaten by a bear on that other path… just saying… ;-) I enjoyed this Susan! HNY 2019

    1. Thank you, Rob. Point well taken, and much appreciated! But like Shelby said in Steel Magnolia’s “…”I’d rather have ten minutes of wonderful than a lifetime of nothing special.” Or something close to that. :-)

Each no doubt a winding, rutted, uphill trail … just with a different cast of characters?

  7. the thought of taking not a different path but not taking it together has made me pause to think too – a well written contemplative piece –

  8. As someone who often hike mountains, I find this very interesting. Now I’m starting to wonder the what ifs. What if I never met those people in the trails?

    1. Or if you had met different people on different trails. It really is a lot to think about. Thanks for stopping by & commenting!

  9. Love it… the thought of falling with that star instead of seeking and finding what’s better…. it’s never the easy road is it?

  11. Beautiful direct free verse, each word carefully chosen and paints the picture and the question. So nice. Is the picture an Alabama trail?
